One of the many perks of working at Vibrant is that I get to try some pretty amazing and high-tech toys every once in a while. Most recently, we brought on a product so special that when it arrived in the mail, I practically jumped over my desk (beating everyone else) to get the opportunity to try the one and only sample unit our company got – this began my love affair with the Elvie Kegel Exerciser.
The name Elvie might sound familiar to you if you are up-to-date on the latest pop culture happenings. This mighty little device was featured in the exclusive Oscars Gift Bag and has since earned some serious public praises from a number of A-List celebrities. In addition to all that, the founders of Elvie are sex-positive females (which I love), and one of them also happens to have started the fitness tracker company Jawbone, so wearable technology is kind of their thing.
So what is Elvie?
Elvie is a smart kegel exerciser that connects to an app on your phone to give you instant biofeedback on your kegel ‘workouts’. Setting up Elvie couldn’t be more simple. You unwrap it from its cute, minimalist, packaging, download the app, pair it with your phone using bluetooth, and you’re ready to go! The workouts last only about 5 minutes and as your PC muscles get stronger, you can level up for more intensities and programs.
The first level you start out on is called Training – this level consists of Pulse (where you use your muscles in short bursts to try to hit 5 dots on your screen in a row), Lift (where you lift the interactive gem on your screen with your muscles above a designated line), then Pulse again, Lift again, and lastly Strength (which is like that carnival game where you squeeze as hard as you can for 4 seconds and see how high you can lift the gem).
First Time Using Elvie
I learned a lot about my vagina the first time I used Elvie. But, starting from the very beginning, let’s talk about the “How”…
When using this kegel strengthener, you have 2 options. You can stand up while doing kegel exercises, or you can lay down on your back – I was having trouble relaxing my kegel muscles while standing, so I opted to lay down and see if it was a little easier. Laying down helped me, and I was able to get my Elvie connected easier with my hands and phone resting on my lower stomach.
Next came making sure I had Elvie positioned correctly. I always assumed kegel trainers needed to be deep in the vagina, but that is not true! With Elvie, you only insert the 3-inch bulb into the vagina and the rest of the curved tail (yes, it is permanently curved upwards, I thought maybe the photos just made it look that way) kind of loops up towards the clitoris. It was completely comfortable, the smooth silicone exterior didn’t have any ‘drag’ or uncomfortable feeling when being inserted, but I could definitely feel that it was in there (again, for some reasons I assumed I wouldn’t really feel it in there at all).
Once I felt confident that it was in correctly, I started my first Training! If we’re going to be totally honest here… I felt a little clumsy and it very quickly became obvious that my kegel muscles were not in tip-top shape! For example, it was hard for me to keep up with the quick succession of the Pulse segment – my muscles had never been asked to flex and relax that quickly before. When it came to Lift, I first read the directions incorrectly and I held the gem under the designated line, instead of over… Let me tell you, I felt pretty dumb when I got a 0% on that one. I redid that same Lift segment (because who’s gonna settle for a zero??), and I watched as my wobbly little gem bounced up and down in a frantic motion, meanwhile I’m over here trying with all my might to keep it level and steady.
After my first 5 minute Training, I was hooked. By using the Elvie just once it was abundantly clear that I had some work to do on my PC muscles! So I started doing the workouts 3 times a week (as recommended).
Ever since I started using Elvie (about a month ago) I have noticed a change with my body, and there is still so much room for improvement! Not only did the little 5-minute workouts become my self-love, self-care, personal time, but I have also noticed a difference in the strength of my muscles as well. No longer am I worried that I’m going to pee a little from sneezing or coughing too hard. My sex life has also had some slow but steady improvements, and I can start to feel my muscle becoming my receptive and my orgasms are starting to get stronger and more intense.
I love that the app keeps track of your progress, and I am always pleased to see myself getting stronger and beating my previous best record. One of the best parts for me is that I use the Elvie right in my own home; there’s no need to go to the gym or put on running shoes, this workout is always right here waiting for me!
It might seem strange at first to workout the muscles in your vagina, but let me tell you from personal experience, it really pays off! Not only do you get a stronger connection to your own body and your pelvic floor, but you also reap all the benefits of toned kegel muscles! For me it’s a win-win!
