How to Choose a Dildo

Looking for a sex toy but not sure how to choose? A dildo could be the perfect fit! This non-motorized toy can provide all the right sensations while being super easy to clean! We will explain how to choose a dildo by explaining what a dildo is, what to look for, and how to choose the right dildo for you!

What is a dildo?

A dildo is a classic sex toy, made to penetrate vaginas and anuses (or anything else you can think of). While often phallic in shape, dildos come in all different colors, sizes, and shapes for whatever gets you hot. Use on your own, pair with a vibrator, or strap one into a harness; the dildo is the base for all of your sexual adventures.

Where should I start?

tantus-silk-medium-dildoTantus Silk is a great first dildo. It’s named for its silky smooth finish, making it an easy glide for first-timers. It has a harness-compatible base and is safe to put in a butt, so there are plenty of options for play time. Dildo newbies should start with Silk Small or Silk Medium.

tantus-uncut-2-dildoIf you’re looking for a dildo that more closely imitates an IRL penis, try Tantus Uncut #2. The resemblance between an uncircumcised penis and the Uncut #2 is uncanny. Tantus has revolutionized penis-like dildos with their dual-density formula: it has a firm core that emulates an erection, while the outside is still super soft. It also comes in three different skin tones.

fun-factory-amor-dildoFor a dildo you can stick on any smooth surface, try Fun Factory Amor. It can be used for vaginal or anal use, with a great little curve to hit the g-spot or prostate. Plus, it has a suction cup base: stick it on your shower wall during alone time, or put it against the headboard and go for a ride while you please your partner in other ways.

njoy-fun-wand-dildoDildos also come in other body-safe materials (aside from silicone). The Njoy Fun Wand is made of stainless steel, giving you an extra smooth sensation. Try the larger head for great g-spot play, or flip it over and use the graduated balls as an anal toy.

What else should I know?

Remember there is no “right sized” dildo, only the size that’s right for you! Long or short, thick or thin, use whatever makes you go “Oh!”

For your silicone dildos, stick with water-based lube so you don’t ruin your toy. Remember, silicone will bond with silicone, and you’ll end up with a differently shaped toy than you started with!

Vibrant only sells toys made out of nonporous, body-safe materials, but it’s important to know when shopping elsewhere, that dildos made out of porous materials can lead to the spread of bacteria. Also be mindful of directions on how to clean your dildo. Be sure to check out our toy cleaners for simple cleanup and our section on Care and Cleaning for tips and tricks!
