Being single any day of the year can be great, but Valentine’s Day is tough for some. You may be bombarded with love and relationship mantras everywhere, you might see couples everywhere you look, and the romance in the air can feel like a bit much. Newsflash: there are plenty of ways to enjoy V-Day while single, and we can help!
Celebrate Self Love
While Valentine’s Day is a great day to celebrate relationships, the most important relationship we have is the one with ourselves. If you’re single and find yourself feeling blue on Valentine’s Day, try to focus on all the positive aspects of being unhitched.
Being single is the perfect opportunity to discover what makes you happy. There’s more time to focus on the positive strides you’re making with no one to slow you down. Take advantage of that fact and celebrate it!
Valentine’s Day is a day when you should treat yourself by buying things you probably wouldn’t buy on an ordinary day such as a favorite meal (bonus: you don’t have to share!), that vibrator you’ve been eyeing, or maybe even a massage. Instead of spending your money to make someone else smile, you can happily spend it on yourself because you deserve to be pampered!
Mingle with Other Singles
Singles Awareness Day falls on February 15, the day after Valentine’s Day, but who says you have to wait until then to celebrate singlehood! An exciting night out on the town with a group of friends will lift your spirits and remind you that you already share important, lifelong bonds with so many people in your life.
Binge-Watch Anti-Romance Movies
While everyone else sits through romantic comedies, consider a marathon of anti-romance movies that highlight the pains of troubled relationships (or whatever genre you want – you don’t have to compromise!).
- The War of the Roses features a married couple in the midst of a vicious divorce battle willing to resort to anything to get each other to leave the home they share.
- She-Devil, an American black comedy film, tells the tale of a housewife whose husband leaves her and their children for glamorous, best-selling romance novelist before plotting her revenge.
- For a more serious anti-love movie, The Other Woman with actress Natalie Portman highlights a woman’s struggle to deal with her husband’s jealous ex-wife while navigating a complicated relationship with her stepson.
Seeing all the stresses of love-lost relationships condensed into two hours will have you thanking your lucky stars you’re single!
Do Nothing, Absolutely Nothing
When Valentine’s Day falls on a weekday, it may be difficult to pull yourself away from the usual weekday responsibilities. But, if you can, actively do as little as possible.
Request the day off from work in advance, dine out or order takeout, leave the cleaning for another day, and disconnect from the world. Binge-watch television, take an hour-long bubble bath, sign out of all social media accounts, or be extremely brave and turn off your phone completely. No matter what you decide to do for Valentine’s Day, make sure it’s unique and spectacular to you.
