Why Reproductive Rights Are Human Rights: Supporting Reproductive Freedom Through Sexual Pleasure

In case you missed it (it’s fine, most people did): new changes to the healthcare bill set to screw women and uterus-owning people big time just narrowly dodged a bullet when the court blocked passage with an injunction. But make no mistake – the Trump-Pence administration is stopping at nothing to roll back access to health care and reproductive rights. The regulations they’re fighting for would allow companies and employers and universities to be no longer required to cover birth control as a part of their offered healthcare plans.

Yes, you heard that correctly. Your birth control may no longer be covered by your insurance.

This means paying $30+ out of pocket every month for birth control pills or patches; it means paying full price for both an IUD and its insertion. This is a huge “F YOU” to women. It’s just another smackdown in a long governmental history of hatred towards anyone with a uterus.

We see more women in Congress and in positions of power than ever before, but never forget that the fight is far from over. We’re still getting run over by people who want to tether and control us.

“Women resoundingly rejected the Trump-Pence agenda, so Trump and Pence took direct aim at women’s health coverage for birth control and abortion. These rules are dangerous, and not what the vast majority of the American people want. Where the administration has failed them, people now turn to the new pro-reproductive health majorities across the country to stop these attacks on their health and rights. Women will remember this attack on their basic health care,” says Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The media has been caught up in so many other insane crises, that this small detail went almost entirely unnoticed. Obviously, the world is a high-key storm right now. There are a LOT of things to cover. But that’s just it, that’s why it went uncovered and slipped through the cracks when it did: the opportunity was there.

Well, we’ve been duped. Now you know. The crew at Planned Parenthood is here to set it straight and they won’t stop fighting for our access.

This is why places like Planned Parenthood and it’s sexual wellness store, Vibrant, are so important. They are the ones fighting for us to be informed and to have a platform to fight for our rights.

Vibrant is on a mission: to protect reproductive rights, to increase sexual wellness, and to introduce widespread sex education to every single human who needs it.

“We believe that all of us in the health and wellness space can spread the word that pleasure is a fundamental component to healthy sexuality. To me, this makes it a continuation of the Planned Parenthood mission. This is just us doing what we ought to be doing. I’m thrilled to see Vibrant leading that charge, while at the same time supporting Planned Parenthood’s mission,” says Vicki Cowart, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

This is the undeniable fact we need to swallow, digest, and understand: reproductive rights are human rights. I’m not the first one to say it and I sure won’t be the last, but damn, it needs to be said again. And again, and again. Until something CHANGES.

It’s absurd and bizarre that we would bracket reproductive rights in some separate sphere than general human rights. Whenever regulations are set to affect only women, they are suddenly up for debate.

No Birth Control Means Less Abortion? Hmmm, No.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want some white guy in Congress telling me how I can or cannot become a mother, choose what to do should I become pregnant, or decide whether or not I have access to birth control.

These anti-choice proponents say they care about abortion rates, children being left in the system, and parents who can’t support them — and yet, they don’t give a damn about giving us access to birth control.

I’ll believe that these people care about abortion rates when they come to the basic understanding that taking away birth control means more unplanned pregnancies. It’s so counterfactual, it’s nauseating.

Take Control of Your Body in Any Way You Can

Supporting Reproductive Freedom Through Sexual Pleasure

There isn’t much we can do in this exact moment other than fight back. How do we do this, exactly? With pleasure. Taking control of your body is the ultimate power move both for yourself as an individual, kickass feminist… and also for uterus owners everywhere.

Be an example. Vibrant is Planned Parenthood’s sexual wellness shop. They believe in your orgasm, your right to pleasure products, and above all, your right to sexual autonomy in every single way.

When you buy a sex toy from Vibrant, you’re supporting the very institution doing the most to protect your reproductive rights.

With the news that Congressional leadership is determined to defund Planned Parenthood, I worry about the almost 100,000 patients that we serve each year and the millions nationally who depend on us for quality reproductive health care,” Cowart says. “Having a company and partner like Vibrant is critical to our future.”

Below are a couple recommendations from the Vibrant store to start you on your journey. Take control where you can. When we stand together, we are unstoppable.

Mimic+ Plus

Support Reproductive Freedom Through Sexual Pleasure: Mimic+ PlusThis little toy from Clandestine Devices looks a lot like a stingray. Just look at those lil’ fins! For sex toy beginners, it can be a bit uncomfortable to purchase a vibrator. It’s OK! You are not alone. Many of us have grown up in a culture that doesn’t encourage the use of pleasure products. We are here for you. The Mimic+ Plus is adorable, easy to use, and it doesn’t look like a sex toy. You could easily leave it on your nightstand and visitors would instantly think it was a piece of decór.
